Alex Farrington is a lonely man. He lives alone, maintains a household entirely by himself. Tired of the companionless life he leads, he goes out one day, looking for a robotic companion. Someone who'll clean the house for him and will provide him with makeshift company, even though they aren't human.
When he goes searching for said robotic companion, he comes across Carla. Made entirely of metal with red glowing eyes and a droning voice, there's something different about her. It's how she talks. The words she chooses. How she moves and acts, how she carries herself is reminiscent of human body language. Without thinking, Alex makes an impulsive buy and takes Carla home.
Over the next few weeks, he learns that Carla believes she once used to be human, her consciousness now trapped inside a falling apart, metallic body. In order to help her feel just a little more human, Alex decides he's going to build her a new body -- one with synthetic slkin. One where he can see her smile. Where he can hear her voice and, ultimately, touch and get to know in a way he couldn't do with her current body. Will Carla ultimately accept Alex's advances, and his hardly hidden sexual desire for her? Or will she ultimately turn him down?
